Conestoga has seven Division I signees on its baseball roster. Penncrest has none. To some, that would be an overwhelming mismatch.
Andrew Sardella’s one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Lions and 8-7 walk-off victory over the Pioneers in Central League baseball action Thursday afternoon.
“Conestoga was really classy,” first-year coach Dan Sardella said. “Even after the game they were like, ‘Yo, you guys beat us.’ I was surprised, very classy.”
Conestoga scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, 7-7. Steve Moppert led off the bottom of the inning for Penncrest with a single, moved to second on a ground ball out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sardella singled to right field to drive Moppert home with the winning run.
Sardella finished with three hits and Matt Briner two for Penncrest (2-0 overall, 1-0 Central League), which jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Starter Rob Brown allowed five runs in six innings to keep the Lions in the game.

Strath Haven 8, Radnor 6: Winning pitcher Dan Enterlin (2-for-3) and Kevin Mohollen (2-for-3) scored two runs each for the Panthers. Sean Corelli (2-for-2) and Connor Wilson (two hits) did the same for the Red Raiders.
Garnet Valley 4, Haverford 1: Ben Faso’s infield since in the top of the eighth inning snapped a 1-1 deadlock. Chance Malek followed with a two-run single to seal the victory.
Starters Sean Sarbaugh of Garnet Valley and James McWilliams were outstanding. He allowed one hit. Nick Bulisky picked up the win in relief of Sarbaugh.
In the Catholic League:
Cardinal O’Hara 5, St. Joseph’s Prep 4: John Baines scored on Chris Salvey’s grounder in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Lions a 5-0 lead.
